The Volunteers

The Project
This is a one year Heritage Lottery Funded (HLF) project which seeks to collect stories from Ugandan Asians who were expelled by Idi Amin in 1972. This was a unique event in that nearly 28,000 people came to the UK within the space of three months with very few belongings and had to be accommodated by the British Government. It’s a story that is waiting to be to be heard.

These were ordinary people who experienced the trauma of leaving everything behind and starting a new life in Britain. For many that has been a story of remarkable success for them, their children and grandchildren.
