Khurdish/Persian

FRI 17 May 2013

Time: 7pm

Time of the Drunken Horses

Duration: 80 minutes

Former assistant director to Abbas Kiarostami and star of Samira Makhmalbaf’s Blackboards, Bahman Ghobadi makes his directorial debut with this gritty, documentary-like look at Kurdish orphans struggling to survive. Shot in the village where the filmmaker grew up, the film unsentimentally depicts how children are packed in trucks and driven to the city to perform such menial jobs as wrapping parcels or, more likely, carrying large boxes like pack mules. Though Ayoub is all of 12 years old, he has become the head of the household, which includes his severely disabled older brother — who is also deathly ill. In order to pay for an operation that might prolong his life, Ayoub joins a group of smugglers who traffic truck tires to Iraq. Negotiating landmines and dodging border guards, they struggle to get their overburdened mules through snow covered mountains by plying them with alcohol. Later, the eldest sister agrees to marry an Iraqi Kurd, under the belief that the groom’s family will pay for the operation. This film was screened at the 2000 Cannes and Toronto film festivals.

HEALING ARTS THROUGH SELF EXPRESSION

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ASIAN CENTRE

Workshops by:  Maxine Alexander

We all start out with an innate creative ability but our perceptions with time start to stifle us. Many of us believe we have to be of a certain ability in order to ‘put paint to paper’. I challenge that concept! This workshop is about enjoying the process and with that in mind you will be amazed by what you can achieve!
We will use a diverse range of materials and processes including collage;
printmaking; pastels; painting; 3 dimensional work and more!

You don’t have to have any experience of art, the emphasis is on enjoyment of materials and the process. Each week we will focus on a different theme working individually and sharing.

START DATE: TUESDAY, 7th MAY 2013 From: 2 to 4 pm
VENUE: Asian Centre, 8 Caxton Rd., Wood Green, London N22 6TB

Diwali Celebration!

Peace, Prosperity, Good FortuneMay they all be with you in the coming year. Happy Diwali!

This is a UNIQUE opportunity to attend Diwali Celebration at Asian Centre. There will be LIVE MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT with KIRAN SACHDEV/ Kiran is Saregama Finalist, “Desh ki Awaaz” winner and has recoreded songs with Jagjit and Sukhwinder Singh. She will be accompanied by stunning instrumentalists. Delicious food is provided by famous Jashan Restaurant.

Diwali is not simpley about lighting diyas, bursting crackers and relishing good food. It is also about enlightenment of soul and burning all your bad times. It is about coming over the darkness of ignorance and stepping into a cleaner and brighter world.  Four aspects of Diwali:

1. The lights: Symbolic of spreading the Knowledge.

2. Fire crackers: When the explosion happens outside, the explosion inside is diffused.

3. Gift exchange and distribution of sweets: Sweets dispel the bitterness and renew the friendship.

4. Feeling abundance: Brings awareness and gratefulness for what one has.

When true wisdom dawns, it gives rise to celebration, and in celebration you may lose focus or awareness. The ancient rishis knew this so to
maintain awareness in the midst of gaiety of celebration, they brought sacredness and puja to every celebration. Celebrate the Knowledge and feel the abundance, for “those who have will
be given more”!

Ensure that you celebrate the festive season with us at Asian Centre on 24 November 2012.
